Seller ID: 859 Edinburgh: Archibald Constable, 1823. Fourth edition, 'much improved' (vii, 367; index, adverts). Small octavo in new three-quarter purple cloth and fancy marbled paper, gilt titles to spine. As Nicols says, this handsome little book 'is intended as an assistant to Gentlemen, whose business necessarily confines them to the Chamber and to the Counting-Room, who seek health and recreation at their Villas; and to the Ladies of their families who take upon themselves the management of their own Gardens and Parterres'. Nicols (sometimes spelt 'Nichols') is cited approvingly by M.E. Jackson in her Florist's Manual (1816). A scarce home gardening book (mind you, quite a big home) in a smart new binding. The pages of this clean, bright copy remain unopened, and the Directory awaits its first reader (who should be equipped with a paper -knife). Price: $475.00
