Crane, Stephen
Wounds in the Rain
back
Seller ID: 1049 New York: Frederick Stokes, 1900. Second edition (347 pp.), small octavo in dark green publisher's cloth, gilt titles and decoration, teg. These eleven stories were previously published in a number of magazines of the day (e.g., McClure's): 'The Price of the Harness', 'The Lone Charge of William B. Perkins', 'The Clan of No-Name', 'God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen', 'The Revenge of the Adolphus', 'The Sergeant's Private Madhouse', 'Virtue in War', 'Marines Signalling Under Fire', 'This Majestic Lie', 'War Memories', 'The Second Generation'. Characteristic of each story is a direct, informal, energetic language which was rising out of the heavy, elaborated verbosity of the late Victorians. There are passages in Hemingway which echo Crane's descriptions here. Rubbed at the edges; a few spots on the covers, epps foxed and scattered infrequently throughout. Quite a good, clean copy. Price: $50.00
