Seller ID: 1082 New-York: Harper & Brothers, 1839. Tenth edition, in two volumes (240, adverts; 286). Octavo, brown decorative cloth, gilt titles to spine. Ex libris with plates on pastedown, blind stamped. Absent map, damage to pp. 19-20 with 10% loss of text which is otherwise clean; bindings worn and stained but firm. Only a fair copy of Stephens' first book, composed, as it were, on the deck of the Austria steamer on his way to Poland and Russia, a short while before he was persuaded by Martin Van Buren to venture south into the Yucatan and Central America.
