back
Seller ID: 1111 London: Arthur Hall, Virtue, 1850. Second edition (vii, 218, adverts), illustrated with 35 engraved b&w plates by Bartlett and 17 woodcuts in the text, including a map of the region and a panorama of Alexandria. Small folio (18cm x 26cm) in fancy publisher's cloth with fine gilt decoration and titles on an Egyptian theme. Light foxing restricted for the most part to margins. Ever since Napoleon's Egyptian adventure (He abandoned an army there), European imaginations were drawn to Egyptian mysteries and were fed by publications such as this by Bartlett which, he says, 'were drawn upon the spot, many with the camera lucida [a device which reflected a mirrored image onto paper]... displaying the principal monuments', the ruins at Alexandria and Thebes, and especially scenes along the river Nile. An attractive copy all around. Price: $300.00
