Seller ID: 1757 Amsterdam: Johannes Allart, 1797. In two volumes, bound as one, first edition (pp. xii, 548; 549- 947). Octavo (21.5 cm) in half leather over marbled paper, gilt titles in red morocco label and decoration to spine, edges washed with yellow. Twenty-four (of twenty-six) fine engravings of Biblical scenes-- absent nos. 16 & 24, called for but apparently never bound in. Volume I of the illustrated Biblical history is an account of Old Testament events; Volume II extends from the birth of Christ to the destruction of the temple at Jerusalem. van Hamelsveld (1757- 1812) was a Dutch Calvinist theologian and (later) political leader during the period of French ascendancy in the affairs of the Low Countries.
