Seller ID: 1759 Ilfracombe: Twiss and Son, 1887. First edition (frontispiece, pp. vii, Part One:Wanderings in North Devon, 92; Part Two: A Selection of Sermons, 93- 176). Small octavo (19 cm) in blue publisher's cloth, gilt decoration to front and rear covers, red titles (faded on spine); includes Dartmoor. Edges rubricated, photographic portrait of Chanter pasted on as frontispiece, printed signature. The Chanters were a literary as well as a devout family. With contributions from his wife Charlotte Chanter, a novelist in her own right, John Greenaway, John Leighton, and others Chanter published Jack Frost and Betty Snow with other Tales for Wintry Nights and Rainy Days which went through six editions. Their daughter, Gratiana Chanter, who edited this memoir, was later the author of The Witch of Withy Ford and The Rainbow Garden. A clean, bright, sound copy. A scarce memoir, found in perhaps a half dozen libraries. Price: $125.00
