Seller ID: 1777 London: Thornton Butterworth, 1929. Edited, with an Introduction and Notes by E. M. Nicholson. Illustrated from engravings on wood by Eric Daglish, F. Z. S. First edition thus, limited to 125 copies of which this is No. 40 (pp. 416, Synonymy, indexes). Large quarto (30 cm) in parchment and batiked cloth over boards, titles and decoration to spine, pages untrimmed; frontispiece portrait plus one other of a younger Gilbert White (1720- 1793), sixteen fine wood engravings by Daglish (12.5 cm x 15 cm) laid down with an additional engraving, signed by Daglish, laid down and enclosed in a folder at the front; tissue guards with letterpress; a folding map of the Selborne region bound in at the back. The editor of this edition E. M. Nicholson (1904- 2003) was, among other things, an ornithologist and director of the Nature Conservancy. Eric Daglish (1894- 1966) also illustrated, among others, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (Thoreau), Rural Rides (Cobbett), Far Away and Long Ago (Hudson). See Horne (162- 63). Gilbert White's Natural History has appeared in perhaps a hundred editions of various sorts of which this is surely one of the most attractive. See, among others, David E.
