Bancroft, Hubert Howe
History of Alaska 1730- 1885
back
Seller ID: 1812 New York: Antiquarian Press, 1960. Modern reprint of the original 1886 edition, with an Introduction by Ernest Gruening (pp. xxxviii, 775, index). Large octavo (24.5 cm) in brown publisher's cloth, gilt titles and decoration to spine, folding map. Bancroft's name on the title page should not be taken to imply he actually wrote this account of the early history of Alaska. According to Gruening, it would be more accurate to describe Bancroft as its 'producer', for he acted variously as its editor, publisher, and sometime writer of the many histories published under his name-- histories, for example, of Central America, California, and the Northwest Coast, thirty-nine volumes in all. Henry Oak, who oversaw 'much of the literary effort' for Bancroft, attributed the work on the Russian period of Alaskan history to Ivan Petrov, a native Russian speaker and adventurer who first came to the United States as a private soldier during the American Civil War. Much of the work on the later period was apparently that of Alfred Bates also on Bancroft's payroll. A clean, bright, sound copy. Price: $40.00
