back
Seller ID: 1809 New York: Derrydale Press, 1937. One of 950 copies of the "Regular Edition" (pp. xx, 182, index). Large quarto (32.5 cm) in original tan dust wrapper festooned with Northwoods fishing and canoe imagery, dark green publisher's cloth with gilt titles and similar decorations to cover and spine, t.e.g., pictorial green endpapers. More than sixty illustrations including eight full-page colour plates from watercolours, two etchings, and two maps, all with tissue guards. Eugene V. Connett III founded Derrydale Press in 1927 and over the next fourteen years published 169 sporting titles, of which Phair's Atlantic Salmon Fishing is probably the best known. It has long been regarded as the most important work on Atlantic salmon fishing and certainly is one of the most attractive. Our copy comes with a print of a sketch of an otter and trout by Roger T. Hall, 'Seen at Munsunguan Lake/ Munsunguan Hunting & Fishing Club', an invitation on the stationery of the Snow Flake Canning Co. to a lunch of lobster stew, a Christmas greeting card from the Halls featuring Canada geese, another card from 'Max and Rog' with a Winter scene at Munsunguan Lake, and six 8 1/2" x 11" pages with the letterhead of Charles F. A. Phair of Presque Isle, Maine, each with the makings of a different salmon fly-- a note, presumably by Phair on 'The Chatterer' in his own hand and in a small envelope attached to the first of these pages ('The Gordon') a dry fly with the note, 'Two Flies Tied by Charlie Phair-- given to me by Roger Hall' initialed 'JDB' and dated in 1973 ('JDB', i.e., Joseph Delaplaine Bates, Jr., whose bookplate is found on the front paste-down). A succession of owners is noted in various hands on another front end paper. The faded and chipped dust wrapper with wear at the folds and edges is mounted on cloth and remains intact with thumb-sized loss at top and bottom of dw spine, gilt on spine a bit faded; otherwise a clean, bright, and sound copy. Price: $1800.00
