Seller ID: 2294S London: Hamilton, Adams, 1844. First edition, signed and with the inscription, ‘David Benson/ from his friend/ Jas. Backhouse/ of York, England/ 1851’ (pp. xvi, 648, lvi). Octavo (22 cm) in half leather over pebbled cloth, gilt titles and decoration, marbled edges and endpapers; two folding maps (Mauritius, South Africa) and engravings as called for. Backstrip with a chip at bottom, glued down (a clumsy repair), front hinge and all but one thread worn through, tips worn, short tear on map fold; contents clean, bright, and sound. Backhouse was an industrious traveller who noted details of settlement life, the country’s natural history, topography, and the like (Mendelssohn). With straightforward repairs to binding, it would be a handsome copy featuring a personal note from the author. Price: $700.00
