Seller ID: 2408 Toronto: James Campbell & Son, n.d. [but c. 1875]. Pirated edition (pp. 184). Duodecimo (19 cm) in publisher’s brown cloth, faded to light brown on spine, cartoon sketch “William III, King of Prussia” front cover, gilt titles. Probably published by Campbell about 1875, shortly after and with a title similar to Twain’s second collection of stories and short pieces appeared, it is much longer than Twain’s little book (which he disavowed, buying and later destroying the plates). It is bulked out by a large harvest of pieces by Twain originally published in the Buffalo Express and the Galaxy which, being just across the order, were easily acquired by a variety of not entirely honourable means. Twain, like Charles Dickens before him, suffered at the hands of pirates like Campbell and sought to strengthen copyright protection. Damage to top and bottom of spine; otherwise clean and tight Price: $40.00
