Seller ID: 2949 Copy No. 1582 (Pp. 990). Large quarto (28 cm) in original half leather hardcovers secured with two screws as issued, thousands of engravings depicting virtually every imaginable tool and device. William Workman (1807- 1878), who with his brothers founded the business in 1829, was latterly Mayor of Montreal. Frothingham & Workman became the largest general hardware merchant in Canada. For more, see the International Tool Catalogue Library and Robert Tremblay’s Histoire des utils manuel au Canada de 1820- 1960 (Musee des Science et de la Technology du Canada, 2001). A copy of the ninth edition (1872), a price list, is held by the University of Alberta library. A few spots and minor soiling to covers, bottom of three pages of index with tears (mostly intact). A truly comprehensive catalogue of period tools, from sledge hammers to paint brushes and everything in between. Price: $500.00
