Seller ID: 3021S London: J. J. Stockdale, 1810. First edition (pp. xxxi, 492), illustrated with twelve plates. Quarto (30 cm), half calf over marbled paper; with the stamp of the Porkington (Brogyntyn) Library at the residence of the Ormsby-Gores. Stockdale is usually described as an editor, compiler, and publisher rather than a writer and in fact published some of Shelley’s work. He is best known as the publisher of the Memoirs of Harriette Wilson, a lady with many friends in high places, two of whom were offered anonymity for a price (yielding the Duke of Wellington’s riposte “Publish and be damned!”). Binding repairs, text and plates clean and tight. Price: $200.00
